Can I Install Crown Molding Myself or Should I Hire a Pro in St. Petersburg FL

Folks ask me this all the time around St. Pete, Largo, Clearwater, and the rest of Pinellas. Can I put up crown molding myself or should I just hire somebody who knows what they’re doing?

Look, if you’ve got a simple room, square corners, and you’re handy with a miter saw, you can probably get it on the wall. Plenty of people do. But down here the humidity and those old Pinellas houses make it a different animal. Walls settle. Ceilings aren’t level. Corners aren’t true 90s. One rainy season and those tight miters you cut start opening up. I’ve watched it a hundred times. Gaps show up at the joints, caulk cracks, and the whole thing starts looking chewed up.

Coping inside corners the right way takes practice. Cutting compound angles for crown that sits at that spring angle isn’t the same as baseboard. Get the spring angle off even a little and the piece won’t sit flush against both the wall and the ceiling. Then you’re fighting gaps the whole way around the room. Materials matter too. Cheap MDF or unacclimated wood moves like crazy in our salt air and moisture swings. You end up caulking every year just to keep it looking halfway decent.

I’ve seen homeowners spend a whole weekend on one room and still end up calling someone to fix the open joints and uneven runs. Sometimes the fix costs more than just hiring it out the first time. Other times the DIY job holds up fine in a newer house with flat ceilings. It really depends on the room and how patient you are with the details.

If the ceilings are out of level, the corners are off, or you want it to stay tight through our wet summers and dry spells, a pro who works these local houses every day makes the difference. We measure on site, pick stock that handles the climate, cope the joints properly, and fasten it so it moves with the house instead of fighting it.
