How Much Do Home Repairs Actually Cost in St. Petersburg? Real Talk from a Local Finish Carpenter

I've been doing finish carpentry and restorations around St. Petersburg and Pinellas County for over 15 years now. People ask me all the time how much home repairs actually cost. They want real numbers, not fluff. The short answer is it depends on the job, the house, and whether the person quoting you knows how things behave down here with our humidity and older homes.

Take sticking doors. Super common in bungalows in the Old Northeast or even some places over in Gulfport and Shore Acres. Sometimes it's just hinges or a quick plane job. That kind of repair usually lands between $150 and $350. But if the door has really swelled or the frame shifted from years of moisture, you're probably looking at a full prehung door plus new casing. Those run $400 to $700 per opening more often than not once materials and making it look clean are factored in.

Baseboards and trim repairs come up constantly too. Water damage near baths, pets chewing things up, or just old worn out stuff. A typical bedroom might run $400 to $800 to pull the old, install new, caulk, and paint. Crown molding or upgrading door and window casings costs more. A standard room often falls in the $500 to $1,000 range depending on the profile and ceiling height. Matching existing trim in these older Pinellas homes takes time. You can't just grab whatever's cheapest at the big box and expect it to look right or hold up.

Most straightforward handyman and finish work I do starts around $75 an hour for simpler stuff. More involved trim and door jobs run higher, often in the $100 to $160 range effective. A lot of smaller repairs people call about end up in the $200 to $500 flat range. Bigger packages with multiple rooms go up from there. I usually quote flat after I see it because that's what most homeowners prefer.

What gets me is when folks go with the absolute cheapest quote and it comes back to bite them. I've fixed more than my share of jobs where someone used cheap MDF that wasn't acclimated or skipped proper prep. Six months later the trim is cupping or doors won't close again because of how our weather swings here. It ends up costing more to redo it right. Same thing with termites. Florida has them everywhere, especially in older stock. If I'm pulling baseboard or casing and spot damage, we pause and deal with that first. Better to catch it early.

Most interior trim, baseboard, crown, and door casing work around St. Petersburg and nearby areas like Clearwater, Largo, or Dunedin doesn't pull permits since it's usually cosmetic. Still, I make sure everything is done solid and up to snuff.

If your doors are fighting you, the trim looks tired, or you've got finish work that needs attention in St. Pete or anywhere in Pinellas County within 30 miles, reach out. I come take a look and give honest numbers with no pressure. Free estimates. Been at this long enough to know what things should cost and how to make it last in our climate.
