How Long Do Window Screens Last in St. Petersburg, FL

How long do window screens last down here? Shorter than most folks think.
I am Josh with Elite Carpentry Restorations out of Lealman, and I pull screens off houses from Old Northeast and Shore Acres out through Largo, Seminole, Pinellas Park, Gulfport, and Clearwater all the time. Standard fiberglass window screen mesh in a mild climate can hang on 10 to 15 years. Pinellas is not mild. Sun, thick humidity, and that Gulf salt air beat the vinyl coating off the mesh. On a west-facing window along the bay, or anything sitting in full afternoon sun, I often see fiberglass getting brittle in about 7 to 12 years. Closer to the water it can go sooner. Polyester and a heavier pet screen usually outlast plain fiberglass. Aluminum mesh holds up longer inland, but salt pits it. I hate seeing that chalky gray cloth people keep because it still looks "fine" from the driveway. Up close it tears if you poke it.
Spline dries out too. Frames warp from the moisture, especially on older bungalows. No-see-um mesh keeps the tiny bugs out, which matters once the mosquitoes show up after a summer storm, but that tighter weave does not buy you extra years. Pets, kids, and a bad storm just speed it up.
If the cloth sags, fades, or has little holes, the screen is done. Patching it is a waste. We rescreen on site with mesh that actually stands up to this weather. Full repair details are on our screen and window repair page.
