DIY Closet Shelving: Can You Install It Yourself in St. Petersburg?

People around St. Pete, Largo, and Clearwater ask me all the time if they can just hang closet shelves themselves. Short answer? Sometimes. A simple kit or a couple of wood shelves in a square closet can go okay if you actually find the studs and keep the spans short.

I hate seeing the other version. Builder wire racks clipped into drywall that pull out after a wet summer. Particle board that swells in our humidity. Rails that sag so shirts drag on the floor. I've walked into homes from the Old Northeast out to Seminole and Gulfport where the whole shelf came down because somebody used those little plastic anchors.

Down here the air is damp and a lot of these walls aren't dead flat. Miss the framing and your weekend project becomes a pile of clothes and a hole in the drywall. Long shelves need extra support in the middle. Cheap coated wire rusts near the coast. If the closet is out of square, you have sliding doors, or you want double hang plus overhead storage that stays level, that's when it stops being a DIY job.

I measure on site, hit real studs, and put in shelves that stay flat through Pinellas weather. No sagging. No rust stains on your linens.
