Best Materials for Closet Shelving Wood vs Metal in St. Petersburg FL

Folks around St. Pete, Largo, and Clearwater keep asking me wood or metal for closet shelves. Down here it is not just looks. Humidity and salt air chew cheap stuff up fast.

I hate walking into a closet in the Old Northeast or out in Seminole and seeing those builder wire racks sagging in the middle. Clothes piled on the floor. Rails pulling out of the drywall. I've watched it a hundred times after a couple rainy seasons.

Metal wire or decent powder coated steel can work if it is quality and screwed into studs. Airflow is decent and it wipes easy. But I have seen the coating crack and cheap brackets rust in Gulfport and Treasure Island homes. Not my first pick for most bedrooms.

Wood done right holds up better for everyday closets. Not raw pine. Melamine coated boards or sealed plywood stay flat through our summers. Wipe clean. Look like they belong with the rest of the trim. They take real weight without bowing when you support them properly.

Solid wood looks nice but it moves with the weather unless every edge is finished. I usually go engineered and sealed for Pinellas homes.

Either way the install matters more than the material. Find the studs. Right brackets. Heights that actually work for how you hang clothes.
