Is Crown Molding Still in Style for Modern Homes?
Share
Yeah, people ask me all the time if crown molding is still in style for modern homes around St. Petersburg and out toward Largo or Clearwater. Short answer is yes, but not the big ornate stuff from the old houses in the Old Northeast. Down here the humidity and salt air chew up anything that is not done right, and I have watched cheap installs gap out after one rainy season more times than I can count. Hate seeing that.
What works in modern homes is cleaner profiles. Flat or stepped stuff, shallow coves, nothing too fussy. It finishes the room without looking like you are trying too hard. A lot of the new builds skip it to save a buck, then the ceiling just looks unfinished. Proper modern crown softens that hard line and makes the whole space feel more intentional. Color drenching it to match the walls is popular right now too, especially in those open living areas.
The key is proportion and material that holds up in our climate. Moisture resistant poplar or PVC so it does not cup or pull away when the seasons swing. I measure on site, show you renderings so you see it before we start, and get the joints tight with proper coping. That is what separates work that lasts from the stuff that fails after the first summer storm.
If you are in Pinellas or within about 30 miles of St. Petersburg and wondering if modern crown molding makes sense for your place, give me a call. We get you taken care of with honest quotes and work that holds up.
