What Baseboards Should I Choose for a Contemporary Home?

Hey folks, it's Josh from Elite Carpentry Restorations out here in Lealman. I've put baseboards in a lot of contemporary homes around St. Petersburg, Largo, Clearwater, and out toward Seminole and Dunedin. One thing that still frustrates me is watching people pick something that looks sharp in a photo then ends up gapping or cupping after one of our rainy seasons.
For a contemporary place you want clean lines that don't fight the rest of the room. Flat stock or a simple square-edge profile does that best. No heavy curves. Just a crisp edge that sits right. Height matters more than folks think. In those open layouts with taller ceilings I see a lot near Feather Sound or even some updates in the Old Northeast, a 5 to 7 inch base grounds the space without looking bulky. Shorter ones can make higher ceilings feel unfinished.
Material is where it gets real down here. Bathrooms, laundry rooms, or anywhere the humidity hangs around near the Gulf? PVC or a good composite. It won't swell or warp the way plain stuff does. For main living areas if you're painting everything, sealed MDF or moisture-resistant primed stock works fine as long as it acclimates in the house first and the edges get sealed proper. I've watched cheap big-box MDF gap after the first summer storm because nobody let it sit. Hate seeing that. We measure on site, talk through how it lines up with your casings and floors, and pick what holds up in Pinellas County weather. No guessing.
