Are Flat Modern Baseboards Better Than Ornate Ones in St. Petersburg Homes?

Hey, it's Josh from Elite Carpentry Restorations over here in Lealman. Folks ask me all the time if flat modern baseboards are better than the ornate ones. Short answer is no, not always. It depends on the house.

I've watched this a hundred times. Someone throws clean flat stock into an older bungalow off Central Avenue and it just sits there looking off. Or they stick fancy colonial profiles in a newer place near Gulfport or out by Feather Sound and it feels too busy for the rest of the space. Down here the humidity and salt air don't care which style you pick. Cheap stuff or a sloppy install gets chewed up either way once the summer rains hit.

Flat modern baseboards do have their place. Clean square edges, no little ridges collecting beach sand and dust. They look sharp in updated coastal homes or open floor plans around Largo and Clearwater, and they're simpler to wipe down. But they can feel too plain in a lot of these older Pinellas County houses. Ornate ones still make sense when the architecture calls for it, like in the Old Northeast or some of the places out toward Dunedin and Seminole. They add that weight and character people expect. Both styles need the right materials and solid caulk that actually moves with our weather swings. Otherwise gaps show up and it looks half finished.

I hate seeing mismatched trim. The profile has to work with the doors, the floors, and the whole feel of the place. That's what keeps it looking right for years instead of something you regret after one season.

If you're trying to figure out baseboards for a home in St. Petersburg or anywhere within about 30 miles, give me a call and we'll sort out what fits.
